Hi, I’m Gem, owner of Sparkling Gem Elite Homes, based in Durham, North East England.
The idea for my cleaning business came from personal experience. Alongside working demanding hours as a qualified nurse for nearly 25 years, most recently as a Clinical Supervisor within the Ambulance Service, I found it increasingly difficult to keep on top of deeper household cleaning.
While day-to-day cleaning was manageable, finding the time and energy for tasks such as moving furniture, cleaning paintwork, and tackling neglected areas was a real challenge. Over the years, I hired domestic cleaners myself and quickly realised that truly reliable, detail-focused cleaners are hard to find.
I have very high standards and noticed that even with clear instructions, important details were often missed. Through helping a friend who was struggling in a similar way, I discovered that I genuinely enjoy cleaning — particularly transforming other people’s homes.
This led me to reduce my hours in healthcare and establish Sparkling Gem Elite Homes, offering a reliable, thorough, and professional cleaning service with the same care and attention I would expect in my own home.

Yes, I am fully insured and Enhanced DBS checked, giving you peace of mind when welcoming me into your home.
Do i need to provide cleaning products or equipment?
No. I provide my own professional cleaning equipment and products, If you have specific products you prefer me to use, I'm happy to accommodate where possible.
How much do you charge?
I charge a flat rate of £20 per hour. Some cleaning companies charge a higher hourly rate for deep cleans; I don't. However, deeper or more detailed cleans will naturally take longer to complete than a standard maintenance clean.
Do you clean while I'm not at home?
Yes, if you're comfortable with this. Many clients provide access arrangements that suit them, and your home is always treated with care and respect.

How long will it take?
This depends on a number of factors, including the size of your home, how often it has been cleaned, and the level of detail required. It’s important to be realistic about what can be achieved in a short visit. For example, if every room needs a deep clean, it wouldn’t be possible to complete an entire house properly in just two hours.
I take pride in doing a thorough, high-quality job and wouldn’t feel comfortable rushing through a “quick clean” and leaving work unfinished. For some homes, this may mean that during the first few visits I focus on one or two rooms at a time to bring them up to a good standard, after which regular maintenance cleans can be carried out more efficiently.
Other options include booking longer sessions for the first few visits or arranging a full-day clean to get everything to the standard you’d like from the start. Every home is different, and I’m always happy to visit and provide an honest assessment of what I feel is needed
